Summary

Chapter 4 is narrated by Cameron, beginning with her reflecting on Mare’s capture. She has nightmares about being captured by Maven herself, and wakes up in her bunk in Irabelle – the newest Scarlet Guard headquarters outside of Trial, Lakeland. She reminisces on the evacuation of Tuck, their last stronghold, after Mare was taken prisoner, and Maven’s address to Norta when she arrived at the palace. She thinks about her fifteen-year-old brother, Morrey, who is currently in the army being forced to fight in a place called the Choke – she, Mare, Cal, Kilorn, and several others were going to rescue the soldiers before Maven downed the plane and took Mare. In the present, she decides to ask the Colonel for another shot at rescuing him. She finds Farley, whose “condition has begun to show” (44), although the reader is unsure what this condition is...
