In a state room of Lear's palace, Kent and Gloucester discuss the king's intention to renounce his throne and divide his kingdom among his daughters. Lear enters with his daughters and sons-in-law, and announces that he will award the largest share of his kingdom to the daughter who demonstrates she loves him most. First Goneril, then Regan, professes that her love is boundless. Cordelia, however, tells Lear she loves him to the limit of her obligation as his daughter. Enraged, Lear disinherits Cordelia and commands that half of Britain will be ruled by Goneril and her husband Albany, the other half by Regan and her husband Cornwall.
