Lear, Kent and the Fool arrive at the hovel. Lear, however, will not enter. He says that the anguish of the storm distracts his mind from the heartbreak of his daughters' treachery. Kent begs the king to enter, but Lear tells Kent to go in. Then, Lear tells the Fool to go in, which he does. Offstage, Edgar calls out some nonsense, and the Fool rushes out of the hovel, saying that it's haunted. Kent calls for the "spirit" to come forth, and Edgar enters in his disguise as a madman.
The madman raves at them, and Lear asks whether he is driven mad after giving all he had to his daughters. When Kent says the madman has no daughters, Lear responds that only daughters could cause a man to sink so.....
