Part 1, Chapters 5-8 Summary
Chapter 5 shows the three officers enjoying the cool after the rain passes, sharing an egg mixed in rice and a cigarette. Grey interrupts, telling Larkin that he has arrested two of his men for fighting and recommends outlawing "two-up." Larkin informs him that Australians need to gamble and orders the men released to him for discipline. Grey tests them by asking about Marlowe's lighter and then asks what they think about rumors of a diamond ring in camp. He thinks it should be locked up safely, but Larkin says that would only get it confiscated by the Japanese. He agrees it could cause great bloodshed.
