Point of View

Kate in Waiting is narrated by a first-person narrator, Kate Garfield, a 17-year-old girl who is a rising senior at Roswell Hill High School. At the opening of the book, Kate is an anxious student who feels threatened by a clique of boys at her school dubbed, “the f-boys.” This anxiety manifests in her story having a voluble feel, as if the reader is sitting next to the narrator on her bed while the narrator is telling her story. The novel can also read as if it is a journal in which Kate is recording her experiences.

While Kate is an honest narrator, she may, at times, prove to be an unreliable narrator. Her perspective of the “f force” is extremely negative, most likely caused by her being cyberbullied by them when she was in middle school. She describes the f-force as being a hateful...
