Chapter 1 Summary

Rather than being divided into parts, the book is divided into iterations. Iteration one, Chapter 1, is the story of a happy family on vacation: a wealthy real estate developer named Mike Bowman, his wife Ellen, and their daughter, Tina. The short chapter follows the family and their carefree banter, as they drive through the jungle of Costa Rica. They stop at a beach, and Tina goes off to play. After running off a short distance, she stops to rest in the shade and notices bird tracks all around the sand.
