Act 2, Scene 1 Summary
Brutus, in his garden calls for his servant to light a candle in his study. Brutus wonders to himself what should be done about Caesar. He does not have personal dislike for Caesar, and he only would act against him for the common good. He wonders if it is necessary to remove Caesar from power, but is afraid that great power might change Caesar. He thinks of him as a serpent in an egg that would grow harmful the bigger it got, and thinks that it should be killed in the egg before it can become dangerous.
Lucius, the servant, returns and reports that Brutus' study is ready for him, and Lucius has brought him a letter he found that was not there before. Brutus reads it by the light of the meteors in the sky. It asks Brutus to awake and defend Rome against being ruled by a tyrant....
