Lena thinks her mother Ying-Ying has a mysterious ability to see things before they happen. She sees only bad things that affect their family and does not know what causes them. Ying-Ying saw the way their new apartment in San Francisco sat too steeply on the hill. She said that her new baby would fall out dead, and it did. She knew when her husband, Lena's father, would die. He gave her a philodendron plant that died because its roots were damaged so no water could get to it. Her father's autopsy revealed that he had 99% blockage of the arteries before he died of a heart attack at the age of seventy-four. Since he was English-Irish American, he ate five slices of bacon and three eggs sunny-side.....
