Megan

Megan is one of the novel’s two main characters. She is 24 years old, and she works as an administrative assistant in a gastroenterology office. She struggles with depression, irritability, feelings of self-hatred, and feelings of hatred towards other people. She also struggles with general feelings of hopelessness and lack of motivation. For example, she dislikes her job, but she feels no motivation to look for a new one. Megan continuously spirals into deeper feelings of depression and self-hatred, and her social interactions are largely characterized by interpersonal friction.

Megan lives in an apartment with Randy, her significant other. Partially as a result of Megan’s worsening mental health, Megan and Randy’s relationship has begun to grow tense.
