Sara Louise Bradshaw

Sara Louise is the narrator and the book's protagonist. She is referred to as Louise throughout the book and is called Wheeze by her sister and her friend, Call. Her character is described as both a romantic dreamer and tomboy at the same time. She feels she lives in the shadow of her beautiful and talented sister, Caroline. Throughout the book, Louise struggles to find her own identity and place in the world away from her sister. She has extraordinary strength of character that allows her to forge her own path. As a child she catches crabs to sell. This is definitely not typical female behavior. When Louise is older, she works with her father who is a waterman.
