Louise's parents return from New York. The grandmother is still tormenting Susan, Louise's mother. The grandmother follows Susan around, reading her passages from the Bible to accuse her of being an adulterer. Susan ignores this and keeps herself busy with work. When Louise attempts to stand up to her grandmother, her grandmother hits her on the head with the Bible. Louise imagines that she may deserve this punishment, although she is not sure what for. Louise is angry with her grandmother at first, but soon this turns to anger at her mother for letting herself be treated this way.
