Chapter 16 Summary

Chapter 6teen begins in the spring of 1944. As the family receives news about Roosevelt's death, Louise remembers when the family first heard about the war beginning. She sees this is the day that she and Caroline began to grow up. Louise receives her first and only letter from Call. In April, Louise takes her exams for graduation and passes with the highest marks recorded for Rass Island. News that the war has ended is overshadowed by news that Caroline has been given a scholarship to Julliard in New York. Caroline will not return home for the summer. She will attend summer school in Peabody. Louise is grateful for this news. She feels that her days of making sacrifices for Caroline are now over. Louise hopes that Call will take over her job.....
