Chapter 14 Summary

Chapter 4teen begins in November. Louise has become more solitary. She loses herself in books to battle her despair. Caroline has given up her vocal and piano lessons in Crisfield because the damage left by the storm created financial difficulty for the Bradshaw family. Louise still has fifty dollars saved from crabbing, but keeps it a secret. The Captain invites Louise, Call, and Caroline to dinner. Louise is surprised to hear Braxton laugh at the Captain's stories. Call and Caroline continue to visit Hiram and Trudy on a regular basis. Caroline often sings for Auntie Braxton. Auntie Braxton has a stroke on the anniversary of Pearl Harbor. During the funeral service at the church, the Captain sits between Caroline and Louise. After the service, Louise's grandmother comments that she thinks that Hiram killed.....
