Chapter 9 Summary

The islanders accept the Captain now that they are sure he is Hiram Wallace. The Captain asks Louise and Call to help him clean up Auntie Braxton's house while she is in the hospital. He tells the children that Braxton's father was wealthy but kept it a secret, even from his family. Braxton found the money when her parents died. Mrs. Wallace suggests that Braxton put the money in the bank, but no one knows where she put it. Auntie Braxton lives as though she is destitute. This chapter reveals that the Wallace family wanted Hiram and Trudy to marry each other when they were young.

The Captain tries to decide what to do about Braxton's starving cats. He decides that he should drown them. Louise cannot go through with this, so she goes.....
