Chapter 4 Summary

Chapter 4 takes place in the spring of 1942. Caroline and her mother have traveled to the mainland. Caroline had to visit the doctor because of an ear infection and the family also needed to get groceries. Louise goes to the dock to meet her mother and sister when the ferry arrives. She finds her father at the shore waiting for them, too. When the passengers arrive, everyone notices the presence of an old man that none of them recognizes. Louise notices that the old man has the build of a waterman. He wears a winter coat although it is April. He has luggage with him, but no one is at the ferry to meet him. The man tells one of Captain Billy's sons that he knows where he is going. Louise is.....
