Chapter 3 Summary

Chapter 3 takes place in the fall and winter of 1941. It recounts the attack at Pearl Harbor. As the family gathers around the radio to listen to news of the progressing events, Louise has an epiphany that something is changing. It appears that this change is not only related to the external world, but also for Rass Island and the family itself. Louise discovers that her beloved teacher, Mr. Rice, has volunteered for the army and is leaving after Christmas to join the war effort. While the children are rehearsing for the Christmas concert, Louise questions whether they should celebrate Christmas while others are suffering and at war. She gets embarrassed when Mr. Rice and her classmates mock her suggestion. Although she feels that her beliefs are justified, the others have made.....
