Chapter 2 Summary

Louise's father was a soldier who was placed in France in 1918. After being injured in the war, he returned home to work as a waterman. Louise's mother came to Rass Island to work as a schoolmistress. Being a waterman, it would have been to the father's benefit to have sons. Sons represent future security on an Island where labor is strongly gender divided. Women are never allowed on the watermen's boats. Louise's father treats his two daughters very differently. Caroline is treated in a way that one might expect a father to treat a daughter, while Louise is treated a little more like a son. Louise is taught to catch crabs at the age of six.
