Summary

Jack wonders why Della came to find him, and wonders what to do next. He waits near her house and asks her out to dinner. She agrees, and he realizes at dinner that he is in love with her. In the middle of their conversation, Jack hears the voices of his debt collectors. He walks Della home so that she does not see them. Once she has left, one of the collectors hits him, prompting Jack to hand over the money that his brother Teddy brought him. Jack tries in vain to conceal all of the blood on his shirt from the attack, and wonders if he should see Della again.

He goes to Bellefontaine, one of the places that he discussed with Della and dinner, to wash his bloody shirt. He falls asleep in a cemetery thinking about death, only to be awakened...
