Chapters 5 through 7 Summary
In chapter five, Belly recalls wearing red-framed glasses to Susannah's funeral because Susannah had liked them. Laurel is at home when she gets the news that Susannah has died. She makes plans to immediately go to Susannah's house in Boston and Belly and Steven will drive up the day of the funeral. Belly and Steven are alone the night after Susannah's death and Belly asks how Steven thinks Mr. Fisher, Susannah's husband, is handing the situation. Steven predicts he's using alcohol to cope and Belly says she stops asking questions at that point. At the funeral, Belly notices her father's arrival. He is seated at the back and waves at Belly.
Back at Susannah's house, Belly, Steven, and Jeremiah slip away upstairs. There are many people in the house and lots of food. Belly offers to go get food for Jeremiah...
