Summary

Chapter 54 is titled “Twenty-Six Miles Across the Sea.” Rachel, Carolyn, and Zomorod travel by boat to camp on Catalina Island. One of the counselors is talking to Zomorod and she mentions that only recently moved to California from Iran. The counselor's first comment is that Iran is where women are beaten for not wearing the correct clothes. Zomorod is “so embarrassed that this is what everyone seems to know about my country now” (206). Zomorod explains that her father is a petroleum engineer and is “helping an American company build an oil refinery” (206). The counselor says she hopes Zomorod never has to return to Iran. Over the coming days, Zomorod is happy to be in a place where she does not hear the bad news about Iran every day and does not have to see how sad her mother is.
