Island of the Blue Dolphins

The island is two leagues long and one league wide. From a certain angle it appears to be the shape of a dolphin on its side, tail facing east. The reefs and rocky ledge look like fins along the shore. The water surrounding the island is filled with many blue dolphins and it is unknown whether the island was named for its shape or the creatures of good omen that live around it. The real island which Scott O'Dell bases this on is called San Nicolas which is about eight miles long by two miles wide and lies in the Pacific Ocean about 100 miles off the coast of California and today is home to a secret U.S. Navy Military Base.
