Time begins to pass very quickly for Karana and she remembers very little except for the morning that she decided she would never live in the village again. She describes the weather and how the fog crept through the huts reminding her of ghosts. She could almost hear the dead speaking. When the sun came out and the fog vanished she made a fire against the hut wall and watched as it burnt to the ground. Then she did the same to the rest of the village. The only thing she saves was a basket of food that she took with her to the headland, where she had decided to wait for the ship to return.
