Ishi: Last of His Tribe Style
Point of view
Ishi, Last of His Tribe is told in third person but readers also gain insight into Ishi's thoughts, which appear in italics. This device allows the reader to experience Ishi's feelings as though his story were being told in first person. Ishi's life is detailed from the time he was a young boy to the time of his death.
Readers learn the ways of the Native Americans and particularly the Yahi People, in late 1800s/early 1900s California. It is clear that life is hard for the villagers at Tuliyani but they still manage to enjoy life and each other. Ishi and his family are forced to hide from the saldu who have managed to annihilate their entire tribe of people. The Yahi devise ways to continue their way of life even while living amidst them.
Ishi's family dies off one by one until he is left entirely alone. By this...
