Summary

In Chapter 8, unable to sleep, Layla slips out of the trailer. She rushes between sweeps of light until she reaches the rocks where she and her friends talked earlier. She lies on the ground and considers the mountains, the electric fence. Feeling helpless, she wants to cry, but focuses instead on her anger. The compass tattoo guard appears. She lies and said she was looking for her necklace. He warns her about breaking the rules, leading her back to her trailer by the arm. She wants to know why he is not turning her in. He stops himself from saying what he was about to say, introducing himself as Corporal Reynolds. He says other guards will turn her in or shoot her.

In Chapter 9, Layla and Ayesha talk in Layla's room. Layla wants to make an escape plan. Ayesha is afraid, reminding Layla...
