Summary

Chapter 1 is titled “A Better Version of Me.” Evie, a high school senior, describes how she used to be interested in reading romance novels, her favorite being “Cupcakes and Kisses” (1), but that is no longer true. Evie is jaded about love and giving all of her books to the library. Mom comes into Evie’s room and tells her that her father is on the phone, but Evie refuses to take his call. Mom invites Evie to bake with her and Evie’s sister Danica, but Evie passes. Evie feels her mother is “disappointed in me for not being the same person I was a year ago” (5).
