Pages 1-44 Summary

The novel starts with Gigi Boudakian screaming at her friend Keir Sarafian. She wants him to admit that he raped her. They are both seniors in high school. The story is told from Keir's perspective. Gigi has asked Carl, her boyfriend who is in the air force, and Keir's father Ray, to come meet them, but they have not yet arrived.

Keir apologizes but he won't admit what he did. Gigi tells Keir that she said no, but in Keir's eyes, "it was nobody's fault." Keir says he loves Gigi, how could he rape her? As Gigi screams, Keir tries to muffle the sound. She bites his hand and he falls on top of her.

Later Keir reasons with himself. How could his two sisters love him if he could be a monster? He has a great relationship with his father...
