Summary

In Chapter 42, Saul is 17 years old when he returns to Manitouwadge from the logging camp. He is now full of rage due to all of the mistreatment, and he plays overly aggressively during games. He eventually must leave the team because of his uncurbed aggression.

In Chapter 43, Saul buys an old truck after he turns 18 years old. He leaves Manitouwadge in search of work.

In Chapter 44, Saul drives around Canada, working different manual labor jobs. To ease his loneliness and pain, he begins to drink heavily, and he develops alcoholism.

In Chapter 45, Saul drives to northern Ontario in 1978. One day, while Saul is drunk in a bar, he encounters a farmer named Erv Sift. Erv is a white man, but he has much respect for the Ojibways. He offers Saul shelter and work on his farm.
