On Independence Day, Frank sits on the front steps of 46 Clio Street, reading the paper and awaiting the Markhams. After the helicopter had left with Paul yesterday, Irv had driven Frank back to Cooperstown, talking a mile a minute all the way. Frank's car had been towed from the Deerslayer since he was no longer a registered guest, so they had found Erma and gone to the impound lot. While waiting for his car, Frank had made several phone calls: first to the Algonquin Inn to reserve Ann a room for the night, then to the bar where they had been scheduled to meet, where Frank had left word for Ann to head over to the suite he'd reserved for her.
