Chapter 12 Summary

When Frank enters the hospital, Ann is in the emergency room lobby, all alone. She gives him a kiss, but Frank senses a finality in that kiss. Ann tells him she's late because she brought Dr. Henry Burris with her, and he's already looked at the chart and recommended Paul be flown to Yale, where the surgery is more likely to succeed. Ann's already arranged for another helicopter, and her chief concern is that Paul will interfere with her excellent plan. Frank asks questions about the doctors' opinions and about the risk of flying to Paul, but he has no intention of disagreeing with Ann. Ann's not so sure of his intentions, however, and keeps trying to convince him. Frank experiences a moment of concern that Dr. Burris is Ann's boyfriend, but dismisses.....
