The Deerslayer Inn is ideal, with Victorian architecture and old-fashioned, homey décor. To Frank's dismay, however, it has no bar, and dinner is only served until 7 p.m. Paul explores while Frank stretches out gratefully on the bed. He falls asleep, and when he wakes up darkness has fallen, and Paul is still gone. Frank wonders where he might be, and consoles himself with the idea that Paul has made friends with some local hacky-sackers they had passed by earlier who had seemed to share Paul's taste in clothes. Frank laments that Paul has no boys his own age to befriend in Deep River, and thinks again how much better Haddam would suit the boy.
