Chapter 8 Summary

Before they drive away, Frank sees Clarissa slip something into Paul's hand. Paul holds the object while Frank chatters animatedly about the journey ahead of them. As they drive through the former colonies, Frank segues into his prepared lesson about unification. He speaks of the difficulties the founding fathers had in persuading the colonies to seek independence. Frank's goal is to teach Paul that he too can unify the fragmented pieces of his life to create one independent whole. Paul, however, mocks Frank's attempts, twisting certain words to throw Frank off topic. Finally, Frank asks what Clarissa gave him. Paul opens his hand to reveal a yellow ribbon, which matches the one she'd given Frank. Paul swallows the ribbon with an evil grin, telling his father a twisted version of Frank's conversation with.....
