Part 3: Chapter 2 Summary

They are in Maryland. The transmission has been repaired. Sam continues to fantasize about what it was like in Vietnam. Seeing tropical plants in a mall makes her wonder about the jungle.

Sam, Emmett, and Mamaw arrive in Washington, D.C. "Sam feels sick with apprehension." She tells herself the memorial is just a rock. She has been thinking about her own death. They park the car and walk a distance to the memorial. Mamaw is having trouble walking so far. They get to the memorial and Mamaw is shocked by the darkness of the stone. Emmett looks up Dwayne's name in the directory and they walk to Panel 9E. Sam is angry to hear a schoolgirl wonder aloud what all of the names mean.
