Sam goes home. Emmett is not there and the house stinks of a flea bomb he activated. She imagines the flea bomb is Agent Orange. She leaves the diary on the kitchen table with a note that says:
"You think you can get away with everything because you're a V.N. vet, but you can't. On the table is a dairy my daddy kept. Mamaw gave it to me. Is that what it was like over there? If it was, then you can just forget about me. Don't try to find me. You're on your own now. Goodbye. Sam."
Sam takes some clothes, camping gear, and food and storms out of the house. While driving, she thinks that her dad had no sense of humor and could not spell. She also thinks about how.....
