Part 2: Chapter 24 Summary

Sam and Irene argue about Sam's future. Her mother says she would be "stupid" not to get out of Hopewell and go to a large university. Irene tells Sam that she does not have to do everything Emmett does. Sam again changes the subject to Emmett's health. Irene does not believe Emmett is ill. She tells Sam his problem is that she took care of Emmett for years when she should have made him take responsibility for himself. Irene says Sam is now doing the exact same thing. Irene says both of them should leave Emmett alone, which would force him to get a job. Sam is scared by that idea. Irene says Sam does not have to be "stuck" with Emmett and reminds her that her father's death benefits will.....
