Part 2: Chapter 19 Summary

The next morning, Sam has a hangover. She finds Tom downstairs working on a dirt bike. They do not mention what happened the night before, but it is clear he is embarrassed. Sam walks home feeling angry that she did not know what to say. She thinks again that Tom has to get one of those pumps.

That afternoon, she goes to the shopping center to look for a wedding present for Lonnie's brother. She realizes she has no desire for Lonnie any more and does not buy a gift. Instead, she is "throbbing with desire for Tom." Sam feels she has to make things work with Tom and believes that if she were more grown-up she could have handled the situation better.
