Part 2: Chapter 9 Summary

Sam cannot get Emmett an appointment at the V.A. Medical Center for months, so she talks him into going to see some of the specialists Anita has recommended.

Lonnie goes with them to the appointment. Lonnie's brother is getting married and Sam is not looking forward to the wedding. Lonnie is pressuring her to buy a nice gift and she worries that she cannot afford a present. She also worries that by Labor Day, Emmett will be bedridden and she will have to take care of him. She wonders how long he will last.

Sam also thinks about her paternal grandparents. She feels guilty for not seeing them. She does not really know them. She then wonders about Vietnam and what it must look like.
