Part 2: Chapter 7 Summary

Sam goes to see Emmett's old girlfriend, Anita. Anita was a nurse and Sam tells asks her about her uncle's pimples and head pain. Anita agrees he should be checked, but does not believe it is anything serious. Anita is still clearly in love with Emmett and fondly recalls their time together. Sam invites her over for dinner. She likes and respects Anita and wants to see the couple get back together.

Part 2: Chapter 7 Analysis

Mason goes to into detail portraying Anita as beautiful and glamorous. This allows the reader to see just how troubled Emmett must be. He broke up with the "perfect" woman because of his anxiety over Vietnam, therefore denying himself happiness.
