Part 2: Chapter 4 Summary

Sam returns home from visiting Dawn and finds Emmett digging a hole alongside their house. He says he exposing the foundation to find out where a leak is coming from. He works through the evening. Sam says he seems obsessed. She has never seen him work so hard. Sam wants him to talk more about his war experiences. She notes that a doctor on M*A*S*H helped his patients talk about their anxieties.

Emmett continues to dig the next day, missing out on his usual breakfast at McDonald's. Sam wonders about other veterans who seem perfectly normal. She thinks, "They had nice houses and wives and kids. They didn't wear skirts, even for a joke, and they didn't refuse to get a job or buy a car."

The next day, she goes with Emmett.....
