Part 2: Chapter 3 Summary

Sam's friend Dawn pierces Sam's ears for the second time. Dawn has four holes in each lobe and Sam is impressed by her earring collection. Dawn lives without a mother and takes care of her house while her father works. Dawn also has a job at Burger Boy. The two girls discuss popular songs. Dawn says she wishes they could go to Paducah dressed in sexy outfits. She fantasies about meeting traveling businessmen who could give them money and buy them something to eat.

Part 2: Chapter 3 Analysis

Mason uses the character of Dawn to show the dismal, uneventful life the girls lead in their small town, which is ironically named Hopewell. Dawn's hopes for the future seem to involve very little besides escaping her home and having enough money to eat well.
