Part 2: Chapter 2 Summary

It is still the same evening. Lonnie tells Sam he has quit his job at Kroger's. He does not have good enough grades to get into college and has no idea what he wants to do. Lonnie suggests they do something or go somewhere, but Emmett wants to watch the eleven-thirty episode of M*A*S*H. They finally drive out to Cawood's Pond, which is known to be a snake-infested swamp. Emmett wears a strange skirt for no particular reason. Sam mentions the bird that Emmett is always looking for. Emmett says he is keeping his eyes open for an egret. They are seen in Florida, but rarely in Kentucky. He used to see them in rice paddies in Vietnam. He says the egrets are the only good memory he has.....
