Part 2: Chapter 1 Summary

It is the summer of the Michael Jackson Victory tour and Bruce Springsteen's Born in the U.S.A. show. Sam will not get to go to either. She has been thinking of war all summer. It is revealed that Emmett is a Vietnam veteran. Sam's father, Dwayne, was killed during the war. When Emmett returned home he could not adjust and so he moved in with Sam's mother, Irene. Sam thinks about those strange years. Emmett brought hippies home to live with them. She remembers their odd dress and psychedelic van. The town was scandalized by the group and some still talk about how Emmett and his friends flew a Vietcong flag from the courthouse tower.

After Emmett's friends left, he calmed down. He attended college, but dropped out. Now he occasionally does.....
