Part 1: Chapter 4 Summary

They have arrived in Maryland and the car has broken down. While they wait at a gas station, Emmett rubs his head. He has been dealing with the pain all summer. The mechanic tells them he will not have the car ready until the following afternoon. Sam will pay for the bill with her mother's credit card.

They stay at the Holiday Inn. Emmett and Mamaw watch television and Sam sits outside by the pool, watching traffic on the highway. She likes the feeling of "strangeness" and being at a crossroads where the interstate and state road merge. That night they eat snacks from the vending machine so they do not have to pay for a restaurant meal. Emmett and Sam drink whiskey, being careful to hide it from Mamaw. Emmett also.....
