Part 1: Chapter 3 Summary

The group sits down to a meal at Howard Johnson's restaurant. Emmett orders beer and Mamaw exclaims, "I'm going to sleep in the same room with a drunk man!" Sam is struck by all of the choices on the menu. Mamaw is shocked by the "high" prices but Emmett encourages her to get the fried chicken she wants.

Mamaw says she keeps thinking about her son, Dwayne, and how his death has changed everyone's lives. Dwayne was Sam's father. Mamaw says she would have known Sam better if Dwayne had lived because then Sam would have grown up just down the road from her house. Sam hates the idea of growing up on a farm and says that maybe Dwayne would have gone to New Orleans. Mamaw scoffs at this and says.....
