Part 1: Chapter 2 Summary

Sam, Emmett, and Mamaw continue on their journey. Emmett chain-smokes cigarettes. Sam does not smoke cigarettes but she has some marijuana in her purse. Emmett announces that they can make it to Washington D.C. that night. Sam says it would be better to stay outside the city to save money. Emmett says he knows an old Army buddy they can stay with but he does not have the man's address. He does not want to make a long distance phone call. He will wait until they get to the city to look him up. Sam enjoys listening to the radio, especially when a song by Bruce Springsteen comes on. After a long day of driving, they stop at a Howard Johnson's. Emmett suggests sharing one room to save money, but Mamaw.....
