Chapter 14 Summary

The novel ends with extractions from G.'s diary during his last year in high school and he exhibits the same sentimentality about people, events, and endings he had experienced earlier in the story.

On the night before G. leaves for Trinidad, G's mother alternately chastises him and dotes on him in her angst to see him go. G's mother is aware that she may never again see her son once he leaves the village, so she takes this opportunity to impress upon him the importance of reading the Bible and staying away from loose women. In her fear and sadness, G's mother erupts in some fits of anger, but G. understands the underlying reason and accepts his mother's warnings politely.

Soon, Trumper arrives at the house to see G. After telling G.'s mother all about.....
