Chapter 13 Summary
Another morning dawns in the village and the crowds begin to gather around Savory's cart to buy breakfast foods. Suddenly the morning calm is disrupted by the sound of the shoemaker arguing loudly with a stranger. The villagers are able to discern from the confrontation that the stranger has come to evict the shoemaker from his shop because the stranger now claims ownership of the property. The stranger tells the shoemaker that he has purchased the land from Mr. Creighton, but Mr. Creighton has not yet informed the villagers of any land purchases. The shoemaker is able to run the stranger out of the shop for today and continues with his day in serious distress.
The eviction scene repeats later in the day when a stranger who tells Mr. Foster that the land on which his house sits has been purchased accosts Mr. Foster. Mr. Creighton had not informed any...
