Chapter 10 Summary
A few years pass and the landlord has remained at his estate. The dockworker riots never reoccurred. Ma sits in her dark house having been awakened by an all too familiar pain and listens to Pa talk in his sleep about slavery. Ma notices that Pa's voice does not sound like his regular voice and she is mesmerized by his long dreamy monologue. At first Ma does not understand the meaning of Pa's words but soon it becomes clear when he says, "The silver of exchange sail cross the sea and my people scatter like clouds in the sky when the waters come. There was similar buying and selling 'mongst tribe and tribe, but this was the biggest of the bargains for tribes."
When Pa finishes, Ma returns to bed and attempts to awaken her husband to alert him to her pain but he is too deeply asleep and does...
