Chapter 9 Summary

Another wet morning breaks in the village due to heavy rains the previous night, but fortunately, the canals and houses are not affected. The normal gathering of early risers in the village center awaits Savory, who does not come, and the schoolchildren are released after one hour's attendance. The teachers have no concrete evidence but have heard that there is fighting in the town. They urge the students to return home before any violence reaches the village.

The men of the village begin to gather, yet remain uncertain on how to proceed because there is no real evidence of any fighting. Soon the women bravely move out to their front steps or stick their heads out their windows in hope of garnering some information. The rumors of imminent fighting nearly paralyze the small village.....
