The story moves again to the home of Ma and Pa who sit in their home talking and watching the scenery from their front door. Ma is preoccupied with the question of telling Pa about her encounter with the landlord earlier today. When Ma had walked to the overseer's office to pay the rent, she had met the landlord coming from the other direction on his horse. Seeing Ma, the landlord dismounted and engaged Ma in conversation about changes and disruption in the village over the past several years.
Eventually Ma confides in Pa that the landlord is worried about the fate of the estate and the village and may be forced to sell because he is getting too old to manage the land and the accompanying strife. Ma also shares the landlord's anger.....
