Chapter 5 Summary

The next morning, the villagers awaken to the familiar sounds of the food vendor, Savory, pushing his heavy cart down the main street. Soon people are surrounding the cart clamoring for the fried fish, jam-puffs, turnovers, and other fried foods. As the people mingle and eat breakfast, conversation turns to the topic of Mr. Slime, the former headmaster at the boy's school who now represents the village in financial and governmental issues.

The issue of a dockworkers' strike is on the mind of the villagers, particularly the men who are concerned for their jobs. The small crowd awaits the arrival of Mr. Slime to report on the status of the strike, and they speculate on the disposition of the goods waiting on the ships anchored in the bay. The village shoemaker, who prides himself.....
